“The hardest victory is not over one's enemies but one's self.”

With these inspirational words, Mike Enriquez, GMA senior anchor and host, led the values formation program for the 2014 GMA Network Excellence Award awardees and finalists. The communications and engineering graduates went through a rigid screening process with ranking GMA officials as judges.

The excellence awardees and finalists were given citations by Felipe S. Yalong, GMA Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.


The awardees, who received plaques, were: Iza Darlene S. Cay (Outstanding Journalism student), Ma. Angela Teresa Sebastian (Outstanding Communication Research Student), and Isabel Patricia Soresca (Outstanding Broadcast Communication Student), of UP-Diliman; Aldrin G. Jose (Outstanding Electronic Communications Engineering Student) of Don Bosco Technical School; Mary Heliane Fabian (Outstanding AB Communication Student) of Angeles University Foundation; Rejzl Anne A. Awit (Outstanding Mass Communication Student) of UP-Cebu; and Fila Guia G. Hidalgo (Outstanding Communication Arts Student) of UP-Mindanao.


The finalists, who were given certificates, were: John Kevin R. Caguitla and Jean-Claude G. De Villeres of Don Bosco Technical School; Rheinlander C. Musni and Kevin C. Quiambao of Angeles University Foundation; Carla Patrice S. Cucueco, Jake Zakk M. Habitan, Melissa Luz T. Lopez, Sunshine G. Blanco, Lorenzo Cris D. Vidal, Marianne Angeli B. Estioco, and Nina Liza Marie Porciuncula of UP-Diliman; and Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines-National Capital Region Ma. Angela Teresa G. Sebastian, Genina Mariel M. Arceo, and Lemuel Silvestre.

Enriquez told the outstanding communications and engineering graduates to steel themselves for because competition in their chosen fields, which can be “tough, rough, and ruthless.”

Be ambitious but in the right manner, Enriquez said. “To whom much is given, much is also expected,” he added.

He also said that one must have initiative, must learn to work with a team, and be accountable, among others, in order to succeed.

He told them the story of GMA’s core values and how the “Kapuso” theme came about – the product of days of debates on understanding what the Filipino wants. Before bidding them goodbye, he gave them the Irish blessing.

GMA reporter and anchor Ivan Mayrina also gave a presentation on GMA’s Think Before You Click advocacy and the power of social media which the youngsters must take to heart.

As the event ended, Tere Pacis, GMA Assistant Vice President for Corporate Affairs, sent off the outstanding students with this message: “We do hope you will do good and make the world better.”
