The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board on Wednesday imposed sanctions on television network ABS-CBN over the current incarnation of the network's reality show, Pinoy Big Brother.

"MTRCB directs ABS-CBN to issue public apology and commit to gender-sensitive programs," the MTRCB said in a four-page order and on its Twitter account.

The MTRCB also reminded the show's staff to "ensure the dignity of women and observe audience-sensitivity."

ABS-CBN was ordered to adopt gender-sensitive measures, including a seminar in coordination with the Philippine Commission on Women.

Limitations, specific measures

The MTRCB said the PBB contestants or "housemates" ought to be able to make "free and informed choices."

The agency also directed the show staff to conduct "closing out" discussions after every task.

Self-imposed SPG rating, if warranted, was also ordered.

The show was also put on a three-month "period of close collaboration" with MTRCB for gender-sensitivity reforms.

The MTRCB also subjected the show to a per-episode post review until the final episode.

Apology

ABS-CBN has issued an apology on the issue.

"While the objective of the week-long task was to see how the housemates would react to a test of their convictions and values, and was not intended to disrespect the rights of any housemate, the producers wish to convey their sincerest apologies to those who were offended, and assure the public and the MTRCB that the program will continue to ensure the protection of women's rights in general, and housemates' rights in particular, while providing quality and yet gender and audience-sensitive entertainment to its audiences worldwide," the ABS-CBN statement said as broadcast on its flagship evening newscast, TV Patrol.   Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
