Comedian, dancer and TV host Vhong Navarro was in hospital after being mauled by a group of men Wednesday night, his longtime manager, the film and television director Chito Roño, said on Friday.
In a statement sent to ABS-CBN News, Roño said Navarro was tied up, blindfolded and beaten up by six unidentified men, who also tried to extort money from him. The incident happened at the Taguig City condominium unit of an unidentified female friend of the 37-year-old celebrity.
Roño added that Navarro, who had absent from his daily noontime show “It’s Showtime” since Thursday, may undergo an operation for the injuries he sustained from the incident. Photos of the badly beaten actor’s face circulated in social media immediately after the news became viral.
The hash tag #PrayforVhongNavarro also quickly became the number one trending topic on Twitter as fans and fellow celebrities including most of his fellow cast members from “It’s Showtime” posted their sympathetic reactions.
As of this writing, the perpetrators remain at large and, according to Roño in a subsequent interview with Yahoo Philippines, continue to send threatening text messages to Navarro.
